SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL
Whirley the Whale is accompanied by a set of 5 illustrated stories and explorative activities to enhance the toy’s cognitive impact. Each story is designed to help the child name different feelings by recognise physical manifestations of it through relatable narratives. It then pairs therapeutic breathing exercises with them.
Each story is featured as a 5 page leaflet that also comes with suggested activities that are rooted in evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including co-regulation and grounding techniques, to help children navigate emotions, build resilience, and enhance their emotional and sensory experiences.
These stories and activities are adaptive tools that provide parents, teachers, and caregivers with structured yet engaging ways to use the toy effectively, integrate the toy into routines while fostering emotional regulation, self-awareness, and imaginative play.
The first story in the series Whirley’s Big Blowout is featured below:

Hey there!
How do you feel today?
Good? or not so good?
Let’s grab some crayons and draw how your feelings look inside you—maybe a swirling storm for anger, a big blue cloud for sadness, or a tangle of colorful lines for confusion.
Use your favorite colors to bring those feelings to life. Let’s see what your emotions look like today!"
How do you feel now? Is it calmer? How does your body feel? Let us draw our emotions again and see the difference!
Try doing some breathing with Whirley!
Hope you have a bubbly day!
